Ding Dong, the Witch is Dead:

You know, I should be dancing (I *am* a dancing machine). I mean, besides waking up and telling myself that I need to be more positive, the Hammer is finally starting to fall for the last time.

That's right, Tom Delay is "retiring."

    And that should be enough.

    But it isn't.

Its a start. He's a big part of the foundation that needs to come down. We just need to trim down a few hundred more (notice that I am NOT advocating the replacement of a Republican dominated congress with a Democratic one. In fact, I would like to see stronger third parties in our little experiment. Only way to keep these jackholes honest is competition - for votes if not dollars).

I won't forget this day. For twenty or thirty minutes, I was high as kite.

    But that's done.

Time to get to get back to work.

PS: anybody else bored with the Sopranos? Anybody PUMPED UP about the latest "reveal" on 24??!!!

PSS: I can't recall where I got this photo (Crooks&Liars, Sirotablog, dailykos, someplace else). Sorry, guys.
I don't know what the deal is. I think he's signing "I'm sorry" or "I'm sorry I'm a jackhole" or "I hope my wife is going to church and praying for me everyday like Don Corleone's wife did - in the book, not the movie."

    November 11

"Dear Lord, Please Take Pat Robertson NOW!...

...that, or how about an extended visit in a Russian prison. Or Gitmo, whatever.

    Thank you!

Oh, and God bless the baby Jesus."

    Short Blast on Bennett:

I'll leave it to you to read the links and come to your own decision about BB's defense of actually expressing what he thinks:
As I expected, his explanation is that he was conducting a "thought experiment."

Hey, in case you missed it, I think he's telling the truth.

That entire conversation was just that. Him thinking out loud.

What shouldn't be missed (meaning it is being missed by the entire "liberal" media), what should be pursued with the unrelenting ruthlessness of a wronged lover, is simply that Mr. Bill clearly expressed his belief that "if black, then crime" (the color of ones skin being a enough data necessary for determining whether or not a person participates in "crime" - of course, here, crime has a narrow definition not to include robbery by briefcase or lying to the Feds).

The abiznortion comment is a red herring.

The man got careless (who can blame him, how many listeners does he have?).

Oh, and just because Hill-billy Dope Fiend Limpballs said his support for BB would be taken out of context, allow me to oblige:
LIMBAUGH: He's just saying, let's not get sidetracked on debating abortion on whether it will do this for the economy or that for the crime rate or -- it's silly. It's a matter of morality and life. Folks, what he said should have been applauded. What he said should reverberate.
To read the entire "context", you can go to this site: http://mediamatters.org/items/200509300009

Not sure what he thinks should be applauded. BB's defense of *not* using abiznortions to help the economy or that if you get rid of "darky," they won't be no need for locking your doors.

Whitewash: Or, Never Having to Say You're Sorry

The headline that sparked this blog is:

Officer says Army intelligence unit was blocked from sharing info with FBI

Most of the article follows (note: I've changed the order somewhat and left out parts).

However, as angry as the article makes me (that according to this guy, Army Intelligence had keyed on Mohamed Atta a year before 9/11), what really pisses me off is barely mentioned in this article.

The Lt. Col. and the Republican vice-chair of the House Armed Services committee both claim that the committee set up to investigate 9/11 failed in their job. They didn't follow leads and they didn't push hard enough.

Sure, not really news, I know. But it reminds me that no one has been held accountable for a damn thing in this frickin' administration. From 9/11, to the outing of an undercover CIA agent, to the lousy planning *of* the war (not enough boots or armor for the boots), to the NOT planning for the end of the war, the missing money, the cost that is in no way aligned with the administrations claims, Abu Garab, and why, two years after the war "ended" we are still losing troops and ratcheting up the back door draft?

I mean, what do you have to do to get fired in DC, these days? This is the CEO administration? No accountability?

    Oh, right! Kenny-boy. I forgot.

    ––

Yeah, I get it. Nothing new here.

So, why am I writing this? What is the point? Who do I think is reading this?

    The answers are "I don't know", "I don't know", and "I don't care."

All I can tell you is if I don't vent off some of this raging impotence, I will pop. I can't talk about this at work or at home. I can't talk about it because this is as rational as I get. If I open my mouth, my heart races, my head pounds, and my voice starts redlining.

And who wants to see that?

    Not me.

So, here's another useless half rant. What does it get me? After I send some money to OpTruth & Siemper Fi, then what?

I wish my father were alive. He would know what to do. Hell, this might have even saved his life. Given him a purpose that was bigger than himself and his habit (or his kids). I

f I squint, I can see him getting organized, learning how to use the web to network and get his message out, raising Cain and showing the stiffs how one really supports the troops.

How ironic that would have been.

Vietnam effectively killed off the man that went there, Iraq might have given him a shot at redemption.

    ----

But, now I have lost all touch with reality. And, for the type of work *I* can get, yeah, being silly doesn't pay that well.

And now I have a really swell headache.

I wonder if Sam Lowry could recommend a specialist?

    ----

Rep. Curt Weldon, R-Pa., vice chairman of the House Armed Services and Homeland Security committees, has said the Sept. 11 commission did not adequately investigate the claim that four of the hijackers had been identified more than a year before the attacks.

''I don't believe they [9/11 Commission] ever got all the documents, but then again I don't think that they pressed properly to get all of the documents,'' Lt. Col. Anthony Shaffer said on CBS' ''The Early Show.''

He says he was associated with a small intelligence unit, called ''Able Danger,'' that had identified Atta and three of the other future Sept. 11 hijackers as al-Qaida members by mid-2000.

<You would think the chickenhawks would jump all over this so they can blame Clinton. You remember Bill? He lied about oral sex. He was tried, he was held to account for his actions, he apologized.>

''The problem was at the time the Special Operations Command is very secretive, quiet warriors,'' he said. ''They like doing things quietly. I had to respect their wishes, to respect the sanctity of that information. What I tried to do was bring them together with the FBI so they could discuss this and take the appropriate action.''

<The guy seems to be saying two things. First, the Army failed to put this info in front of the FBI. Second, (and a possible reason – partial reason why) the info was gained by less than “legal” means. That is serious. I mean, they have a reason to be concerned. However, there has to be a way, a wink, a sign, something that tells the FBI that they MUST investigate this guy. Does that make it legal? Ask me in about five years. For now, I’m saying until people are nailed to a cross, nothing will change and we will be less safe.>

The commission investigating the Sept. 11 attacks left the Able Danger claims out of its official report and has since said it did not obtain enough information on the operation to consider it historically significant.

In an interview with Fox News Channel and The New York Times distributed Tuesday evening, Shaffer said the panel was not given all the information his team had gathered.

''I'm told confidently by the person who did move the material over that the 9/11 commission received two briefcase-size containers of documents,'' Shaffer said in the Fox News report. ''I can tell you for a fact that would not be ... one-20th of the information that Able Danger consisted of during the time we spent.''

Rage Against the Dying of the Light:

Well, no one likes to hear a grown man whine, so let me just say that its been a lousy couple of weeks. However, last night I decided that today was going to be different. That today I would fight to stay in a good mood throughout the day.

    Fine.

Wake up and head for the shower.

So far, so good. The biggest hurdle has already been cleared: I actually remembered that today was to be different.

About fifteen seconds under the water and BAM! NPR is launching round after round of news bits specially designed to piss me off. Iran, Iraq, Bush, Gaza,...each one triggering a slightly different "un-happy" reaction.

But, hey, the water is hot and I've got lots of bubbles. So, I breath in...hold it...and let it all out. Clear my head and repeat.

Finally, I towel off, thinking I've survived the best the talking heads could throw at me.

And then, as I step out of the shower, those bastards launch their smart bomb: today is the anniversary of Elvis' death.

Before you roll your heathen eyes into the back of your heathen skull, this blog isn't about EP.

Believe it or not, this is not a date I try to store. Most years I can get by without being reminded.

Its not like I get all weepy or anything. Its just a deal.

But the point is, after I did some deep knee bends and got my breath back, I was able to stay focused on my goal.

To be honest, I am *not* in a particularly good/happy mood. However, I am not being the negative nell I've been for the last several weeks. So, that's plus.

And, not coincidentaly, I read a couple things that I would like to share with you:

    > First, dude I just love the headline: Researcher finds 1 in 3 Houston teens has abused cough syrup

The abuse of a codeine-fortified cough syrup is so widespread among youths here that Houston has become nationally known in the rap culture as "the City of Syrup," a local researcher says.

Dude, that is so cool. Spacecity is so last century.

Besides, how can you call a place "Spacecity" when you can't get a signal for your cell unles you are under a tower.

    > Next there was this gem about who should get a driver's license. Ok, in case you missed it, California toyed with given driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.

And, before you pull a Limbuagh, turns out its not just the lilly white (draft dodging, dopeheads) that are against it. It really depends on where you were born, not the melanin content of your outer epidermis

I forget the exact number, but a majority (of some number) of Hispanics do *not* believe illegals should get driver's license IF those Hispanics were born in this country.

If one asks foreign born Hispanics the same question, you get the opposite reaction.

Wonder what causes that? Wonder if its a "hey, its my country" or if its the success at painting illegals as "others?"

    > Then there was a story the other day about this man seeking asylum in the US. What is he running from? Evidently, being gay in Mexico is enough of a...what...risk of being tortured or otherwise abused, that the official granted asylum.

I mean, we return Haitians and Cubans every chance we get (unless, of course, they have money and aren't quite so brown). Are you telling me that being gay and having AIDS in Mexico is worse than the governments in Haiti and Cuba?

    Huh?

So, they (Mexican nationals) are progressive enough to realize that a Sambo cartoon is only a joke and doesn't diminish the people it explicitly calls "monkeys" but their treatment of homosexuals is so horrendous that they qualify for asylum?

    That dog don't hunt.

    > And, finally, from the same people that brought the Iraq War (its been over for over two years now), the war that would fund itself by getting the Iraq oil flowing...they now bring you *NO* fuel economy standards for Hummers and other *jumbo* SUVs.

Turns out, that would be too high a price for the struggling Merico auto manufacturers to bear.

    Hmmmm.

How much is a barrel of oil?

And I can't recall how that whole supply/demand thing works...but, it seems if there was a way to lower demand for a product, why wouldn't that kinda put a downward pressure on the price for that product?

The bottom line: if you WANT a vehicle that is so crappy for the economy, the ecology, and your own personal karma, well, I think its ok if you should have to pay more for it.

I mean, what if it would cost GM...OK, OK, I'm bored.

What am I doing about the price of a barrel of oil? I sold my SUV for a freakin 4 banger that I come very close to admitting that I HATE VERY VERY VERY MUCH. MY S.O rides the bus downtown. And, unless we need the storage, the SUV stays parked.

During the day the AC is set 83 degrees and doesn't kick on until almost six o'clock.

It may not be much and it may have zero impact, but I dream of the day when I can get another SUV. I realize that is not very likely, but I can dream.

I miss running over curbs, through flooded streets, and the occasional four wheel adventure.

    Crap.

    I'm getting cranky now!

    PERFECT!

Just before I have to sit in a meeting with the other "tech writer" and listen to her whine and cry and bitch about everything.

Time to break out the emergency response kit: Elvis 30 #1 Hits.

Agent J: You know he's dead, right?

Agent K: Hell, son, he ain't dead. He just went home.

    <tear>

    RE: Jerry Seinfeld Moment

You know, I had a crappy commute to work this morning.

Roads are full of nancy-boys&girls. I mean, I realize this isn't NEKCAR, but come on. There is wide open road just on the other side of your hood. Move over and let me go experience it. Please!

And I could continue bitching about poor state of mind I'm in, but neither of us care enough that.

Let's just say I'm having a crap start to a crap day.

And then, MS ate my blog!

It was witty, funny, bawdy, and grew hair were you really wanted it (as opposed to the backwardazzed places the good lord likes to have them "just pop out" of).

And now you will never have the chance to read and bow at the majesty. It is your loss, not mine.

I wrote it, lived it, and then exorcized it out of my skull.

Its out there in the ether. Maybe you can catch it.

And if you can, I want what your taking. Freaking sobriety sux azz. Sick and tired of always being switched on.

    But that is another blog.

    July 26

    Add Water and Stir:

So, the AFL-CIO is breaking up. They are pizzed, the Teamsters & and the Service Workers are pizzed.

AFL-CIO wants to spend more money getting "friendly" politicians elected.

The Teamsters and the Service Workers want the bulk of the money to organize more workers.

Both groups want it there way and are willing to hurt the other to get it.

    Your sorry and I'm sorry.

Personally, I've never been in a union and, to my knowledge, neither has anyone in my immediate family (except my crazy aunt who is a teacher - and then, I *assume* she is in a teacher's union).

However, my S.O. is slightly different. Union born & bread. Papa was an AT&T Man from back in the day (boy is he laughing now that the baby bells are getting back together).

Neither of us are particularly "pro" or "anti" union.

    WHAT'S THE POINT, COWBOY!?

Everyday courts in this country are siding with big business to cut back on pensions, health care, and other benefits that these companies SIGNED  A CONTRACT TO PROVIDE for their workers. In all cases, the workers have fulfilled/are fulfilling their part of the deal (meaning they are retired/working). Still, bidness is able to walk away from their obligations.(+)

Additionally, none of us have jobs that are secure. There's outsourcing, of course. Then, there is this nasty little trend to fire older workers *before* they retire. Bidness is saved from paying into a pension fund AND they can hire younger workers for less. Also, hey, if you ain't Union, you can get fired for almost any reason.

So, bidness isn't loyal to you and any pension or other benes they promise aren't worth the paper they are printed on. (++)

Of course, if you try to go to court to try and get your SBC bill reduced and tell them that *your* company (your bank account)  is down this quarter due to high energy costs (electric & gas) and your income stream has been negatively impacted by unrestricted foreign competition (you got laid off), I wonder if you will have the same luck as, say, American Airlines?

I wonder if its an accident that "Our" government just made filing for Bankruptcy a lot harder...

    ------

We have to live up to our obligations. We sign a contract with them, we've got to honor it. From paying for crappy cell phone service to non-compete clauses, they have us by the nay-nays and aren't afraid to throw the full weight of the aMERCIO justice system at you and I.

    What have we got?
What is our source of "power"?
    Where is the balance?

I don't know if Unions are the answer.
I don't know if getting "union friendly" politicians elected is the answer.

I mean, if $60 a barrel for oil won't get us to just SLOW down consumption, well, I don't know what will motivate anyone to act.

    What do you think?

    --------------------------------
+ Dude, I get it if the company fails, then there is no one to provide the benes. My point is, why are the *only* people that have to *pay* the price the same people who are the only ones that lived up to their end of the contract?
Who speaks for those retirees who selected a company b/c of the benes and did everything they were required to do in order to get those benes? Why are *they* punished? What did they ever do but what they were asked?

++ I've been contract for 363 days at the same company. They finally offered me a perm position. This is a good company and I enjoy the people and the project I work on. However, they offered me a 20% pay cut.

The manager countered with their benefits package. And, if I didn't like this person, I would have laughed:
    A) I've been without them for a year. If I needed them, I think I would have found a suitable substitute (my S.O.'s job, maybe).
    B) Are you kidding me? You expect me to swallow a 20% CUT IN MY INCOME STREAM for *your* 401(k)?

Oh, you match! Well, then, here, why don't you just pay me what you pay those guys in India. I'm so grateful.

    July 06

    Not My Juh-juh-generation, Bay-bee:

OK, so I’m reading this article about how companies are finding it difficult to motivate today’s twentysomethings when I am suddenly rocked to my core!

    But first, a disclaimer:

Numero Uno: Big bidness can bite my shiny metal azz (I can say with all humility as I am employed, clothed, feed, motorized, telephoned, cabled, celled, 401(k)’ed, mortgaged, ect, but them all). Greedy, ill tempered and most likely “fascist enabled.”

Numero Duo: I guess I have become a crotchety old fart. Don’t get me wrong, I have no love for “my generation.” But, I often catch myself cursing the young bastards that drive around the block with the cars thumping. On a good day, I’ll catch myself and say its payback for all those years when I blasted rock and roll out of my factory speakers. And while I wouldn’t go so far as blame the end of the world on them, I do notice that the ones pizzing me off at the movie theater probably aren’t old enough to have voted for GWBush (the first time).

All that having been said, after reading this article, I think I love these guys. My favorite quote:

"Traditional motivators such as money or authority no longer hold much sway among younger workers," said Mike Hyter, president and CEO of Boston-based consulting and training firm Novations/J. Howard & Associates.

And why would that be? Evidently these fresh-faced college grads look at work “differently”:

“A job is short-term and disposable, loyalty is to self, not the organization, and being engaged is prized above all else.”

OK, the romantic in me wants to believe that these guys have seen what has happened to their parents and in the society in general. And they aren’t going to fall for the same old trap.

That it is not they who treat the job as “short-term and disposable,” but it is bidness that treats the employee as disposable.

Well, as I said, most of the article goes on to whine about how challenging these “entitlement generation” kids can be to motivate.

    Boo-frickin’-hoo!

More power to you young punks!

Don’t fall for the trap and never forget: you are disposable. They will dump you the instant they can. In fact, they are striving for ways to get rid of you RIGHT NOW.

So, stay focused on the whole “quality of life” thing.

Maybe it will trickle up to the old farts.

But, hey, seriously, just turn the damn cell phone off when you go see a movie. You can unplug for 120 minutes, right?

Quick Blast B4 Getting Back to the Grind

Could NOT resist this piece of classic human rationalization (especially as it takes form within an entire nation). Check out the jpeg at the end of this blog. Those are the newly minted stamps from our neighbors to the south.

Go ahead, take a good look. I’ll wait. ….

OK, I can’t wait. Here are some classic quotes from the AP article (gOD, I just love people):

Such "racial stereotypes are offensive, regardless of their origin," White House spokesman Scott McClellan said Thursday. Added Stephen Hadley, the Bush administration's national security adviser, "there's no place for this kind of thing. It's wholly inappropriate, and we've made it clear."

Um, why is the National Security Advisor chiming in? Doesn’t this guy need to spend HIS EVERY WAKING MINUTE finding OBL?

"It's not racist," said Pablo Garrido, 40, who sells Memin Pinguin's adventures along with hundreds of other titles at a street stall in southern Mexico City. "He's just a naughty boy who is always getting into trouble."

You know I’m holding it in until the end, right? You know where this is going…., RIGHT?

Mexican Foreign Minister Luis Ernesto Derbez shot back Thursday afternoon, saying that criticism of the stamp and of Memin Pinguin reflects "a total lack of understanding of our culture ... a total lack of respect for our culture ..."

"We all know who Memin Pinguin is," Derbez said, speaking of the fictional character as if he were a national hero. "No Mexican that I know of sees him as a derogatory character."

OK, this guy cheeses me off.

    <Brokensword screaming>

Hey, pendejo-jackazz, if you were to ask any white person in the U.S. fifty years ago if Sambo was offensive, they would have said “NOoooo! He’s just an amusing little boy. Just like that charming Buckwheat!”

    </Brokensword screaming>

    More quotes:

"It's a cartoon character, and it's part of our history," said Antonio Moreno, a Michoacan native who said he does not think the stamp should be stopped.

You know, I’m about to BUST! (How many more quotes…?)

ONLY ONE MORE (hey, some sanity): "We're very racially sensitive in the United States, and Mexico is just in denial on race issues," Jimenez said.

    OK, I’m saying it: S-P-E-E-D-Y G-O-N-Z-A-L-E-Z!

I guess what I am trying to get my head around is which part of the argument is intended to make this obvious racism “OK.” (they know its racist, read between the lines)

Is it because it’s a cartoon or because it’s part of their history or is it both?

Sleazy, stupid, dirty ‘skins have been a part of American cinema & literature every since we killed off enough Mohicans to make our way down to Texas and steal if from Mexico.

That makes it part of our history and our culture. And I’m pretty sure we can find ample cartoons that perpetuate that stereotype.

    Cool!

Thank you, Mexico, for making racial stereotypes OK, again!

Um, except for those comedians who do those “white guy” voices.

I’m really sick of hearing EVERY SINGLE NON “WHITE MALE” (or Gay White Male or White Female) cracking on us. We all don’t talk like that, we don’t all come from money, some of us can dance, and some of us do have a hard time with the police.

So, just back the phuc OFF!

    June 01

Too Little Time, Too Much Crap:

Look, you know I’m drowning in a sea of BS if I’m not writing about the first conviction toward Tom DeLay’s forcible removal from office. You know I can’t see past all the crap if I’m not blogging about the blessed savior Felt. And you know I’m outta my skull with detritus if I am not screaming and ranting my blog off about what a complete pack of worthless jack-holes the Texas Lege is for their work during their ONCE EVERY TWO YEARS ON THE FRICKIN’ JOB.

But I don’t have the time to enumerate their sins, today.

So, in the fifteen seconds before my next deadline:

I’ve been thinking a lot about how companies are suing their former employees in order to reduce the benefits they (the company) agreed to pay. I’ve been thinking about how companies promise retirement benefits to their workers and then pawn those polices off on the Federal government. I’ve been thinking about how companies lobby Congress to pass laws that allow them to do these things. I’ve been thinking about racism and (dare I say it in aMERICO), I’ve been thinking about class.

In other words, I’ve been thinking about how *we’ve* been turned not into sheep, but veal.

How long will we continue accept these conditions? What will it take to cause the average Joe and Jane to shake off the sleep of consumerism?

    I don’t know.

I’ve got bills to pay and work to do.

Calling In Sick, Dead Don't Count, Rummy Dummy:

Check out this story from the Chron. Basically, its reporting on a trend in big business to eliminate all "unplanned" absences.

Yes, all. If you call in sick AND you didn't plan *IN ADVANCE* for this sick day (this exact date) then you could be fired.

Breaks down like this: you get x number of "unexcused absences." Once you exceed that number, no matter the reason, you are

terminated. So, you have no "sick days." All paid days off are bundled together.

I love the example they give in the story. "We aren't firing you because your grandmother died. We are firing you because

of the date she died on."

In fact, I am dealing with this exact situation. Very frustrating. I find it intolerable that I can no longer call in sick.

even though I have "sick days." My fondest wish is to be stricken with a communicable disease so I can be sure and

get to work and cough on all my supervisors and everyone in HR.

Then there is another story about government *actively* disseminating propaganda.

Suddenly, the Oil Refinery bidness became one of the safest industries to work with no deaths reported in both 2002 and 2003. Awesome, right?

    No.

    Just like…

cost of the war in Iraq,

the cost of changes to Medicare,

the state of the Social Security system,

torture <see my previous blog on the “necessity” and “utility” of torture>,

    WMDs…

the Bureau of Labor Stats has monkied with the numbers. See, they don't count "contractors" toward a refinery's "death count." Those deaths are tracked, but they are put into a sub-category that carries no weight in terms of firing off an alert to OSHA that their *may* be safety issues at a plant.

In fact, all refineries have "offloaded" the most dangerous work to contractors. The result is when these people die, they don't count.

    Literally.

According to current guidelines, none of the fifteen deaths in Texas City explosion will be counted. Additionally, if no MORE than three employees die for the rest of this year, the Bureau Labor Stats will report ZERO deaths at this site.

Hmmmm, under reporting deaths. Where have I heard that before?

Good gOD, Dave, get your shiznit together, man. I really could use a good laugh.

    One last hit:

Defense Sec’tary Rumsfeld wants to move the concentration of military bases from the Northeast. Wants to relocate them to the South and West.

Hmmmm. Northeast, South and West. Help me out! Is there some connection between, some geological-quasi-political reason for this move….I wonder…..

Lots of ground to cover, today...

    > Here's a story about Yahoo turning over the contents of a dead soldiers Inbox to his next of kin. This story really cheesed me off because, it seems to me, Yahoo's policy is very clear. Upon death, Yahoo deletes the account. To me, that is a promise of privacy. I have the expectation that no one will have access to this account unless I give them my password. Perfect. I like it that way.

And, I don't know about you, but I use my Inbox to store more than email. I keep some pretty personal stuff there. Things I don't want ANYONE to have access to (dude, don't talk to me about the illusion of security or privacy - do what you say you will do when you say you will do it). However, there is nothing filed away that would be necessary upon my death.

Now, I get what the family desires. Its not right for a parent to bury a child. And they, understandably, want more of their son to hold on to. But, again, to me there is this expectation of privacy. We all have thoughts that, if expressed out loud, might misrepresent who we are and what we believe. Or, more importantly, thoughts that might misrepresent the person we want/need/desire other people to *believe* we are.

Just because you gave birth to me, doesn't give you unrestricted access to what's inside my head.

    Period.

    > Maggie Gyllenhaal is getting Dixie Chicked.

<bias> Dude, there is *something* about this chick</bias>

    Poor thing.

She had the gal to suggest that we look at the events of 9/11 in a larger context. "...Because it is always useful as individuals or nations to ask how we may have knowingly or unknowingly contributed to this conflict..."

Knowingly or unknowingly. Pretty harsh criticism.

Here, I'll tell you right now how "we" *unknowingly* contributed to the events of 9/11: we have bases in Saudi Arabia. Let's see, what else is in Saudi Arabia....hmmm...Oh, yeah: Mecca. I wonder how the religious right in this country would cotton to a Muslim army base in Jerusalem (I know, I know, but close one eye and try). Now, the people that were murdered that day had nothing to do with that decision. And, maybe, they would have still rammed those planes into our people if our troops weren’t in their country.  Maybe not.

Still, it’s a fair question to ask.

And while we’re talking about getting Chicked: I am fed up with people getting all uppity because someone in Hollywood expresses an opinion. So, what! Its like the TV and Radio. You don't like what you hear, change the channel or don't go to the movie.

Look, I can't stand Mel Gibson and his father's view on God, religion, and a ton of other things. Does that mean I won't go see another Mel Gibson film or one by his production company?

    Maybe.

    Probably.

I used to love Mel. Thought he was fun to watch. Admired him for doing Hamlet AND respected him for not completely sucking at it.

Now, I just see him as human. Take him or leave him. Yeah, I wish he would shut up and just make movies. But I'm not going to spam his website telling him what an anarchistic azz he is because he won’t shut up. That's childish. I'll just close one eye and still try to enjoy some of his previous work.

    > DeLay Update:

Your prayers and positive karma *are* working (or was it the animal sacrifices I asked you *not* to perform). Yesterday, the Republican leadership said that they're ready to cancel the rule changes they made so that an investigation of DeLay can begin.

Those rule changes where made specifically to shield DeLay from FURTHER knocks from the Ethics committee (he received *three* last year).

    Keep up the good work!

    > Microsoft Sux MORE!

In case you haven't been following local politics in the state of Washington, there was a bill under consideration to ban discrimination against gays and lesbians. MS, first supported the bill. Then, withdrew their support (I wonder why?). Now, that the bill has died, BILL has made comments that suggest "next time" they will support it. Again. You know, until the end.

Good going, Bill. Bravo. Guts (I guess I really shouldn’t bust on Bill. They do have domestic partner benies. That’s cool.)

Oh, and it looks like the Texas Leg will add legislation to ban gay and lesbian marriages AND civil services.

You know, I get that *your* religion doesn't dig the whole "gay" thing. Fine. But, in a country that was founded on "Make No Law Respecting Religion," shouldn't we at least allow a civil procedure? Can't we please, please move out of the 19th century?

    Please?

    > Finally, some good news and bad news about the new Pope

Actually, its all bad news for the new Pope, but good news for an individual church.

Three men are suing this church, the diocese, and now the new Pope for the sexual abuse they were subjected to at the hands of a priest to be.

The good news first: the church appears to have handled the situation correctly. Upon being notified of the behavior by this would be "man of the cloth," the church kicked him out AND notified child protective services. Awesome. Why can't they all do that?

Why? (here's the bad news) The men are alleging that this Pope is part of a conspiracy to cover up reports of abuses. Turns out there is a letter, penned by the new Pope while serving in his previous position as head of the congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. In this letter, he states that "...cases of this kind are subject to the pontifical secret."

Doesn't sound good, to me. Sounds a lot like the whole "we'll take of our own, don't tell the police" line we heard about a couple of years ago.

And they mock Clinton's "Don't ask, don't tell."

    Whatever.

    * WMDs have been re-classified by the White House to include "improvised explosive devices." So, I guess because I have bleach AND ammonia that makes me Chemical Ali?

    * When asked why people who emerge from bankruptcy are inundated by Credit Card offers, the American Bankers Association said "just because people have gone bankrupt doesn't mean they can't handle credit. Some times bankruptcy is caused by a job loss, medical bills, and divorce." Really? In that case, you better get on over turning the new law. Those are exactly the people that won't be able to use bankruptcy any longer.

    Perfect.

Well, you know, it took 2,000 years for the Church to apologize for demonizing Jews, 500 years to apologize for the Crusades, and sixty years to apologize for passive support of the Holocaust.

I guess it may take awhile before the Church’s tolerating (supporting?) the REPEATED VIOLATION of children BY THOSE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE WELL BEING OF THEIR SOULS will get to the top of that list.

    * Two Republicans have verbally pooh-poohed on Tom Delay's parade. Awesome news. Of course, I'm not sure how much better off we all are with Delay loose in the world. Something tells me he ain't going back to killing bugs. Well, full time, anyway.

    * Oh, and now (I’ve waiting so long to post that I’ve crossed news cycles) Delay is blaming it all on the democrats and that pesky left-wing media.

You know, if the media is so left-wing, why is there only one AirAmericaRadio "Network"? I mean, you expect a reasonable person (oops, already screwed) to believe that the left-wing is deft enough to infiltrate

    Clayton Williams? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Besides having a azz-load of cash, ole Claytie-boy used to want to be Governor of Texas. Claytie-boy ran ads (a lot of ads) that culminated with him, dressed to the 9's in his *working* cowboy gear, riding his horse at a pretty good clip. Then, he pulled up the reins, sharp, and literally flew off the horse, landing solidly on his two feet to announce he wanted to be in charge.

    Wow.

Look, he is good with a horse. This ain't no drugstore cowboy. And this is Texas politics.

    So, why did he lose?

It’s true that Texas had not quite become the, um, Republican strong hold it is today. But, Bill Clements (R) had been elected Governor twice (though not in a row - that damned ole Mark White (D) snuck in there for one term between BC's two++). So, another good ole boy, true, a Republican, but still a good ole boy, can't be blamed for wanting the job.

This was 1990. Maybe Claytie-boy was the first *victim* of the changes that would lead, two years later, to Bill Clinton's rise. Maybe, Texas wasn't ready to let go of its "yellow-dog" status. Or, maybe (and this is the romantic in me), the good folks of Texas weren't quite ready for a true-blue redneck to run things.

<Note: the Governor in Texas doesn't really run things. He gets the credit, but its the Lt. Gov and the Speaker of the House that have the Constitutional power in the Lone Star State**>

See, weeks before the election that pitted Claytie-boy against Ann Richards (D) (Oh, if you've heard stories of her being a lesbian, that was Karl, too), Claytie-boy was having the press to his ranch for a “greet and eat.” He had plans to take those reporters out on his ranch, maybe show them some of his trick ropin'. Unfortunately, it was raining that day.

So, there they all were, sittin' and standin' underneath this porch, drinkin' coffee with the candidate, waiting for the rain to stop. Guess there must of been some "uncomfortable silences" because the CANDIDATE FOR THE GOVERNOR OF TEXAS SAID IN FRONT OF A PORCH *FULL* OF REPORTERS: "Rain is like rape, there's nothing you can do about it, so you might as well lay back and enjoy it."

<Note: if you google "Clayton Williams" and "Rain is like" you will notice that there are a couple of variations. None that change the meaning.>

He lost that election and he deserved to. Anyone that oblivious to what he's saying, and who he is saying in front of, doesn't deserve to lead squat (and they still don't. People are just sheep. Scared, uneducated, sheep.).

Why have I taken your time to tell this tale from days gone by? To give you background for a Claytie-boy update:

See, we're gearing up for the Governor's race. Rick Perry (R) is the incumbent. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R) is currently a U.S. Senator. She has been putting out trial balloons for months about running against Rick in the next election. And Claytie-boy has an opinion about whether she should run.

He's against it. He's for party unity and thinks she should stay in Washington. All of which he told, directly, to Hutchison. You know, personally. Because that’s the kinda man he is.

Oh, not Kay. No, no, no. He spoke directly to her husband:

"Williams said he didn't speak to the senator directly but told her husband, attorney Ray Hutchison, of his concerns several weeks ago."

Great guy, that Claytie-boy. A real man's man.

But, in his defense, Kay does send mix signals. In her own ad, when she first ran for the Senate, there was something "hinky" going on. Assume the ad ran for thirty seconds. For 29 1/2 of those seconds, we were shown images of her qualifications to lead from the Senate. The last, little, bit shows her, in a skirt, at some "picnic" waving, turning, and getting into the PASSENGER side of a big, red FORD/GM truck.

"Hi, I'm tuff on taxes, tuff on commies (it’s been awhile), tuff on the brown people, but my husband runs the house."

Maybe I'm being a little ruff on Kay. I've never liked her (starting with this ad), or her politics. And those politics cancel out whatever "advantage" their might be having a women in the Senate. It has always seemed to me that someone has been pulling her strings.

What does all of this mean?

*With any luck:* a three way race for the Republican's. Rick, Kay, and Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn. And they ALL self destruct with a fireball large enough to kill off the dinosaurs.

*If there's a god in heaven:* Strayhorn wins, handily.

*If a god in heaven loved us:* a great Democratic candidate wins (hahahahahahahahaha).

    ------------------------------------

++ By the way, if you've heard the story about Karl Rove bugging his own office and blaming it on the "other" guys, it was the race where Mark White beat his guy (Bill Clements).

** Its fair to ask, then, "Why do you bust GWBush's biznalls over his record as Gov if he doesn't weld the power?"

That's a great question. Look, if he want's to claim that he helped the children of Texas while Governor, and that that qualifies him to be President, then I get to say, "Hey! Jackazz! The children of Texas are, and have been, worse off since you came in and quit halfway through your second term." You wanna take credit that's not yours to take, that is just politics. Don't cry to me is you get the blame that comes with it.

    March 07

    Need Help:

Have you heard or read about this: http://www.guardian.co.uk/italy/story/0,12576,1432041,00.html

Here is the "issue" in a nutshell:

The former Italian hostage who saw her rescuer shot dead at a US checkpoint in Baghdad said yesterday they might have been targeted because of US objections to Italy's policy of negotiating with kidnappers.

Ok, anyone that has read any of my "Rants" knows how I feel about the US actions in Iraq. However, this claim, that the reported was targeted because a ransom was paid has left me speechless. And, quite frankly, pissed. Pissed because Bill O'Reilly and I will be on the same side of an issue and THAT doesn't make me happy. EVER.

Which is more probable? That she was targeted or that they were speeding toward a check point (or, just as tragic, the grunts at the checkpoint over-reacted)?

So, can anyone explain to me how her rationalization makes sense? Was the plan (by the U.S.) to fill her car full of holes, air ship it to Mosul, and let someone else find it? Was the plan to remove her from the car and dump her somewhere? What was "the plan" when those escorting her were never found?

I don't know. This story just makes me very cranky (the whole O'Reilly thing).

Lookit, I can see how torture became standard procedure. Grunts were told to soften up prisoners for interrogation. Bam. We did it. The command structure needed to punished, but that is another blog. And (now, please stay with me 'til end), one can see the logic/the reason for the order (stay with me!). There was a reason. Soften up to gain access to info. Now (here you go), the reason *assumes* that the info you will get is usable (see my previous blog about the uselessness of torture). And that is the flaw. That is why torture doesn't work. That is why torture is a bad idea (well, one of a few good reasons why). Still, one can follow the logic.

Note: for those of you who may be asleep, this is not an endorsement, nor an excuse for those actions. Understanding the reason is NOT the same as agreeing with it. Besides, how can you fight something you don’t understand? Nothing has hurt us worse than our continued ignorance of NAZI Germany. Calling Hitler “insane” or “evil” doesn’t help us to understand how a people can be lead to do the things, to ignore the things that happened everyday in that horrible time. The key here is *the people were led*. There was a method, there was a plan. Understanding the reason & methods is key to preventing it from happening again.

Killing someone because you disagree with the method used to gain their release...what is the logic? OK, the only one that makes sense is "anyone who f***s with the U.S. gets it between the eyes."

Now, I *am* cynical. But I am *not* that cynical. I believe this government is corrupt and a whore to big business. I believe that this government is criminally negligent for the events of 9/11. I believe Bush and Chaney & co. are shallow, greedy men.

What I don't believe is that this government has started targeting individuals for being rescued.

    Not yet.

I'll need a whole lot of convincing...

How to Shut the FCC Up:

    Background:

    * The House just approved a measure that would jack fines for "indecency" through the roof.

    * Janet Jackson exposed her lovely nizipple for two seconds.

    * Over 500 thousand complaints were registered by the FCC over the nizipple shot

Side-bar: Did anyone bother to ask the FCC why it was ok to talk about four hour erections but not an accidental shot at a lovely nizipple?

     Solution:

** A coordinated "attack" on FCC (Hello thought police! This is a non-violent "attack.") **

Step One: Get over one million individuals to agree to call/write/email the FCC after specific "event"

Step Two: pick the events. This is the tricky part. Its gotta be something (several somethings) that warrant a legitimate complaint. I say its tricky because, while my preference would be every televised religious "program," I don't think that's productive. Necessarily. I mean, if there is someone speaking about damning someone because of their lifestyle, well maybe. Also, don't want to inflict punishment where it isn't due. For example, I wouldn't want to target a news program unless that program has actually done something to warrant this action.

Step Three: Keep it on the down-low.

The point is, if 500 thousand complaints is what it takes to make the FCC move, lets use it to "our" advantage. Half a million isn't nuttin' to put together. Especially when you aren't asking anyone not to buy gas or not shop for groceries. All they have to do is call or email.

Shoot, next time Ann Coulter shows up on the screen aught to be enough. Scary broad! Eat a sandwich. (wait, is that a lifestyle choice I'm damning her for....

    Hit them in the checkbook

So, before the election, my lovely Mother told me why she couldn't vote for Kerry: "we can't have legalized 'gay' marriage."

    Right.

Well, because I know how well informed she is (see above), I pointed out the whole Jeff Gannon - Gay Hooker for Compassionate Conservatives - good enough to work *for* the President, not good enough to be a full citizen.

She feigns outrage. When I, again, try to point out how corrupt "her" President is, she says (very annoyed), "You think I'm happy with Bush? I'm outta work. He's talking about cutting my Social Security benefits. You think I'm happy!"

    All politics is local.

I asked her if she was volunteering for the Democrats. She said yes, but I am not convinced. She's never been political. But, if I could nudge my almost reactionary wife over to the light side of the force, I can prolly get Ma' to agree to allow people to be people.

    -------------

Clarification 1: Again, its not that Jeff Gannon is a "Gay." Its that the people he shills for hate him because he's gay but aren't afraid to use him. I mean, he is a prostitute (allegedly?).

Clarification 2: With all the other "issues" riding on this past election, she picks "Gay Marriage." Not the war. Not the lies. Not the wasted lives. Not the economy. Not those silly tax cuts. Gay Marriage. In case you were wondering, this is why they pursue these silly "initiatives."

    JDG & JDN: Freedom Fighters

More on our buddy Jeff Gannon from Salon:

Thus a phony journalist planted by a Republican operation, used by the White House press secretary to interrupt questions from the press corps, called on by the president for a safe question, protected from FBI vetting by the press office, disseminating innuendo and smears about critics and opponents of the administration, some of them gay-baiting, was unmasked not only as a hireling and fraud but as a gay prostitute, with enormous potential for blackmail.

You know, I wanted to write something tacky about someone needing "their pipes cleaned" at the White House, but I think it would send the wrong message. What is wrong/hilarious about the whole Jeff Gannon episode is *not* the guy's sexual orientation. I mean, since he's shilling for the most nasty group of homophobes, one MUST point it out. But, only to show the hypocrisy of the right-wingnuts that hired him (the DELICIOUS irony that someone inside the White House worked very hard to get this guy inside the press corp and AVOIDED THE VERY FBI BACKGROUND CHECKS THAT WOULD HAVE KEPT THEM FROM BEING EMBARASSED).

Of course, that assumes that they are, in fact, embarrassed. Since the liberal media has fallen asleep at the job, guess they have nothing to worry about.

In that case, my bad. Good job. You win. Time to invent the Left Wing version of the Michigan Militia.

    * How did this character obtain a coveted place in the White House?

    * What did the White House press staff know about him?

    * How does his story fit within the larger scandal of payola punditry, with federal funds subsidizing Republican propagandists in the press corps?

    * Did someone in the Bush administration give him a classified document?
