    Rita-Licious: The First Pics

Check out the killer shots to the right. Am I good or is the light AWESOME! Man, somebody call Hollywood...

Rita-Licious: Coming Down Off The Buzz

I was just minutes away from  nailing up some plywood across my front door when the Governor phoned in the reprieve (I've got this lovely decorative door that would cost me an arm and a leg to replace).

Of course, I had to climb up into my garage, move out all the junk I had on top, and sweat my nalgas off to GET that plywood. And, I did get to break out the power saw to cut. So, not a complete waste.

And, by "reprieve" I mean the Rita looks like she may miss HARRIS COUNTY.

You know, I am surprisingly calm about it (all the money I spent, all the money I didn't make b/c I wasn't at work). Don't get me wrong, not saying I *want* a 'cane heading straight toward me. Its just...well,...there's been a lot of anxiety burned over this.

But, I won't count my ducks until they've hatched. So, if we make it w/out losing power, well, then I might get cranky.

Of course, if we lose power, cranky won't describe it.

Glad to get news that Shaun & the OG made it out of dodge. I've got lots of people that hoofed it when they got the chance, and they have all (finally) made it to where they are going.

We'll hold down the fort til you get back.

    Be careful out there!

PS. I'm burning what gas I've got so I can speed on every highway in this town. Can't believe how deserted the streets are.

Rita-licious: The Calm Before The Freak-out!

We're about 12-15 hours before landfall. Depending on what channel/site you are looking at, we are either out of the woods or neck deep in it.

There just is no way to know what to expect (well, except some form of water, wind, and clouds).

Right now, besides blogging, I'm finishing up the last of the prep work. After I burn some images to disc, I'll start taping windows and moving some items out of the south facing rooms.

Then, I imagine around ten pm, I'll start filling the tub with water and arranging the freezers for maximum...um, well, freezer-ness.

That's about three hours of work to fill about fifteen hours.

Not sure I'm going to be able to convince *certain people* that playing SnowBlind or Republic Forces isn't a waste of time...

Hey, I did want to take a moment to...um, I don't know if apologize is correct...but, admit that I was wrong or whatever....

    Sort of...

Anyway, the whole nightmare that was evacutating Galveston and parts of Houston. Was it screwed up? Could it have been done better? Yes, to both.
But, I would like to say that the roads are now moving at posted speeds.

Hey, folks, IT NEVER RUNS AT POSTED SPEEDS in Houston.

    Period.

So, yes, it was a cluster, yes, they need to improve it, BUT, with 12-15 hours to go, it is flowing and that is what is important.

See, I can say good things about the people in charge....

OK, still waiting for some people to show up and I need to get back to work.

Hopefully, in a day or so, I won't have *any* interesting pictures to post.

    We're Rita-licious:

Well, we are riding it out.

It looks like Rita is heading enough to the east to A) block the only viable exit out of the city (and ruin my plans to visit Graceland during a school day) and B) possibly put us on the east side of the 'cane (the soft, gooey side).

Against my better judgement (I've got a whole rant, er, blog planned on this), I spent Wednesday morning shoring up our supplies. I spent five hours and got very little of what I felt/feel we need.

Fortunately I fueled up and grabbed some propane while there was some to be had (um, in case this is not having the impact on you that it should, let me spell it out: HOUSTON, TEXAS IS OUT OF GAS. That's like Arizona being out of Republicans, Hollywood out of liberals, the President out of vacation time).

I've got a good sized extended family enroute, so this will have to be short, for now.

Expect some updates (or at least a wrap up) to come.

What I would like to say to people who may, on some off chance (I've got, what, 12 hits after 8 months of this), be reading this from outside of H-town: while things may change for the worse, right now, its not so bad.

The entire city of Houston is not and has not EVER been ordered to evac. Galveston? Yes. Parts of south Houston? Yes. Counties east and west? Some.

But, since EVERY SINGLE ROAD OUT OF TOWN (curiously, not I10 East...) is clogged like fatman's arteries, those people are probably STILL IN TOWN with the rest of us.

OK, I've still got a list of things to do.

At least I'm not like the IT guy next door. He's got to go into work tomorrow. Yikes!

So, you can expect a wrap up blog, a holycrapthemediaisevilbutnotbecauseitsliberal rant, and a rant on the effects the mediaisevilbutnotbecauseitsliberal had on me (ME!).

    And, maybe, a "holycowisthatacowthatjustflewby" blog...
